Underated and understated guitar work in songs
Doing some retro listening recently....just how good is the guitar playing in Steely Dan's ''My old school''. Yours?

How about The Wind Cries Mary by Hendrix? Nice chops in that one.

Guitarist on My Old School was the legend that is Geoff "Skunk" Baxter, now a NASA rocket scientist, apparently...

I like Jesse Harris' understated guitar on Norah Jones massive - selling first album. he wrote half the songs too.

I've always thought the Hollies lead singer( Clarke?) was one of the best around. I think he's packed it in now.

I saw Johnny Marr last night in Wolverhampton and some of his must fall into this category. Particularly 'Still Ill' and 'There's A Light That Never Goes Out'

Tony Hicks - Hollies - Air That I Breathe?

Ever-present but completely understated:
Richard Thompson - Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where the Time Goes??

For an underated bass line there's Don't You Just Know It on the flip of Jack The Ripper from Screaming Lord Sutch and The Savages.

Elsewhere Hank Snow was a master of "less is more" with some delicate understated acoustic work and don't ever forget Richard Thompson in the sadly underated dept.
